Mike Wallace to Retire

March 14, 2006

Mike Wallace is going off the clock.

The award-winning "60 Minutes" journalist announced Tuesday he will be retiring his post as a fulltime correspondent at the end of the current television season. He has been a fixture on the pioneering newsmagazine hour since it premiered in 1968.

"I've often replied, when asked, 'I'll retire when my toes turn up,'" Wallace said in a statement. "Well, they're just beginning to curl a trifle, which means that, as I approach my 88th birthday [May 9], it's become apparent to me that my eyes and ears, among other appurtenances, aren't quite what they used to be. And the prospect of long flights to wherever in search of whatever are not quite as appealing."

Peter Tomarken Dead at 63

March 14, 2006

The brotherhood of game show hosts lost a key personality Monday when Peter Tomarken, ringmaster of the 1980s hit "Press Your Luck," was killed along with his wife and two others when a plane he was piloting went down off the coast of Los Angeles Monday.

Tomarken, 63, and his wife, Kathleen, 41, had volunteered their services for a medical flight that was picking up a patient in San Diego for transfer to UCLA Medical Center. Moments after its 9:36 a.m. takeoff from Santa Monica Municipal Airport, the 1973 Beechcraft 36 plunged into the Pacific Ocean.

A search party was on the lookout for an unidentified third passenger, who is presumed dead, authorities said.
