Busch sentenced to community service for traffic ticket
February 8, 2006NASCAR driver Kurt Busch was ordered to perform community service after pleading guilty to three traffic citations Wednesday. His lawyer, Lee Stein, said his client pleaded guilty in suburban Tolleson to speeding, a misdemeanor, and two civil citations: following too closely and passing in a no-passing zone. The community service was part of a plea agreement, Stein said, and must be completed within a year. Busch also paid $580 in court fines.
Daytona 500 paying out more than $18 million
February 8, 2006Reserved seats for the Daytona 500 are sold and Daytona International Speedway announced the event will pay more than $18 million (?15 million), the biggest purse in the history of NASCAR. Prizemoney for the Feb. 19 race will be $18,029,052 (?15 million). The previous record was $17,623,980 (?14.7 million) last year. The winner of this year's season-opening Daytona 500 will collect a minimum of $1,438,155 (?1.2 million).

Richmond Busch, Cup test set for March, April
February 8, 2006Nearly all NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series drivers are expected to participate in important test sessions leading into the May 5-6 doubleheader weekend at Richmond International Raceway. NASCAR Busch Series drivers will visit Richmond's 3/4-mile oval on March 28-30, while NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series drivers will test on April 11-13.

Widows file lawsuits over Hendrick Motorsports plane crash
February 8, 2006The widows of two men killed in the Hendrick Motorsports plane crash in 2004 sued the company claiming negligence, The Charlotte Observer reported Wednesday. Hendrick Motorsports showed "conscious and intentional disregard" for Randy Dorton's safety, Dorton's widow, Dianne, said, according to a complaint filed in Lincoln County. Dorton ran Hendrick Motorsports' engine program.
Investigation: Hendrick crash linked to crew error
February 8, 2006Flight crew errors probably caused the Hendrick Motorsports plane crash that killed 10 people with ties to one of NASCAR's top syndicates, the National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday. The crew improperly read instruments and missed a landing approach to Blue Ridge Airport, the NTSB said in a report synopsis e-mailed to The Associated Press. The Beech King Air 200 crashed into fog-shrouded Bull Mountain in the foothills of the Appalachians in October, 2004.
