Harvick says no one has filled Earnhardt's shoes
February 9, 2006In at least one way, Dale Earnhardt may have been irreplaceable. Kevin Harvick, who stepped into his seat at Richard Childress Racing the week after the seven-time champion died in a crash during the 2001 Daytona 500, says no one has been able to replace Earnhardt as a voice for the drivers in the NASCAR Nextel Cup garage area. Speaking Thursday during NASCAR's annual Media Day, Harvick said longtime Cup star Rusty Wallace filled some of that void until he retired last year.

NASCAR launches effort to boost diversity
February 9, 2006NASCAR is revving up its efforts to bolster diversity in stock car racing with a new plan to train and hire more minorities to drive, work the pits and handle its business. The plan announced Wednesday in Washington, D.C., with the help of House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., includes working with historically black universities to teach NASCAR's technical curriculum by linking them to the Universal Technical Institute, a multi-campus program used by the racing body.

Now, a mere two months after winning his second Nextel Cup championship, Stewart heads to Daytona International Speedway to begin his title defense. The 2006 season revs up Saturday night with the made-for-TV Budweiser Shootout, followed by the Feb. 19 Daytona 500.
NASCAR greets deep rookie field
February 9, 2006For many years, NASCAR rookies simply stuck yellow stripes on their back bumpers, then tried to stay out of the way. Jeff Gordon changed that in 1993 when he got a top ride at Hendrick Motorsports and immediately showed he could race with the elite in what was then the Winston Cup series. Gordon didn't win, but he came up with a pole, five top fives and 11 top 10s on the way to winning Rookie of the Year.

The quarterback who won two Super Bowls in the 1970s with the Dallas Cowboys is the co-owner of a first-year NASCAR team. "I've never been involved with a sport where I didn't have some control," Staubach said. "I'm going to be there at Daytona, scared to death, and yelling for Car 96 to make sure it comes around the track and finishes.
