Sleeper could surprise Hendrick, Roush-Yates for Daytona pole
February 11, 2006While Elliott Sadler had the fastest lap in the final practice on Saturday, Larry McReynolds says the powerful Hendrick and Roush-Yates power plants could be shocked during Daytona 500 qualifying (Sun., 12:10 p.m. ET).
Hendrick lashes out at lawsuit filed against him over 2004 plane crash
February 11, 2006An emotional Rick Hendrick expressed disappointment Saturday about a lawsuit filed against him by the widow of one of his employees killed in a 2004 plane crash, calling some of her claims a "cheap shot" and a personal attack on his family. Dianne Dorton filed suit earlier this week in North Carolina, saying Hendrick Motorsports was liable in the death of her husband, Randy. He was one of 10 people killed in October 2004 when a Hendrick plane crashed near Martinsville, Va.

Confusing Daytona 500 qualifying gets under way
February 11, 2006Winning the pole for the Daytona 500 has always carried a bit of mystique. The fastest driver in qualifying for the season-opening NASCAR Nextel Cup race earns bragging rights and plenty of attention for a week. Beyond that, though, the pole means very little. Prize money for taking the top starting spot for the Feb. 19 Daytona 500 is $11,200 - small change in a series in which the top teams have season budgets of $15 million to $20 million.
Vickers trying to rebound from early troubles
February 11, 2006Brian Vickers' first outing of the season ended early. Vickers blew an engine on the ninth lap of Friday's first practice for the season-opening Budweiser Shootout, forcing his team to scramble to get the car ready for Saturday's race. "It wasn't much fun," Vickers said. "We had no warning. ... It just let go. It's just one of those things. Sometimes motors just blow up. There are a lot of moving parts in there.

February 11, 2006Bill Davis Racing plans to appeal a $6.5 million judgment for breach of contract.
Will Ferrell's movie gets a name; Fergie to sing 500 anthem
February 11, 2006The NASCAR spoof starring comedian Will Ferrell finally has a name. The movie will be titled "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby." It is scheduled to be released in early August.
Notes: A Petty revival; Newman, Johnson pet projects
February 11, 2006Petty Enterprises might be on the verge of a turnaround. Kyle Petty had the third-fastest lap in the opening practice for the Daytona 500 on Saturday and new teammate Bobby Labonte wasn't far behind. Although it might not mean a whole lot, it was a good sign for a NASCAR team that hasn't won a race since 1999. "This is just another step toward what we want to do at Petty Enterprises," said Robbie Loomis, the team's vice president of racing operations.

No teammates, only speed in Budweiser Shootout
February 11, 2006Larry McReynolds says Tony Stewart could continue his recent Daytona domination in Saturday's Budweiser Shootout, but it may come at the expense of teammate Denny Hamlin if the two-time race winner can find a faster partner.
