Bank of America extends its NASCAR connection with new deal
February 21, 2006Bank of America Corp. said Tuesday that it has reached a five-year agreement with International Speedway Corp. to sponsor four race tracks, including California Speedway near Los Angeles. It's the latest of several recent high-profile deals involving NASCAR and the nation's second-largest bank, which for years paid little attention to the marketing potential of stock-car racing despite being based in Charlotte, the sport's hub.

Knaus suspended three more races, fined $25K
February 21, 2006NASCAR suspended crew chief Chad Knuas for three more races Tuesday and fined him $25,000 for making an illegal modification to Jimmie Johnson's car during preparation for the Daytona 500. Knaus was ejected from Daytona following the cheating scandal, and Johnson went on to win the race in a legal car. Now Johnson must compete in the next three events without his crew chief. Knaus won't be eligible to return to a race track until the March 26 race in Bristol, Tenn.

February 21, 2006Jimmie Johnson believes he won the Daytona 500 fair and square. That is more than he can say about postrace comments that painted him as a cheater. Johnson fired back Tuesday at Ryan Newman, who said the victory wasn't "necessarily good for the sport." Johnson won the race Sunday without crew chief Chad Knaus, suspended for making an illegal modification to the No. 48 Chevrolet during qualifying.
Hall of Fame Racing penalized after debut
February 21, 2006Hall of Fame Racing, the NASCAR team owned by former NFL quarterbacks Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach, received its first penalties Tuesday for infractions during the Daytona 500. NASCAR found an unapproved carburetor on the No. 96 Chevrolet during qualifying for the 500. The infraction received far less attention after Jimmie Johnson's crew chief was caught cheating the same day.
