Hendrick Motorsports bounces back from adversity

February 23, 2006

Jimmie Johnson's victory in last Sunday's Daytona 500 is one more example of how Hendrick Motorsports bounces back from adversity. Johnson raced in NASCAR's biggest event without his crew chief, Chad Knaus, on suspension after being penalized for making an illegal modification to Johnson's car a week earlier in qualifying. But Darian Grubb, the lead engineer on Johnson's No. 48 Chevrolet, took Knaus' place, showing the depth that Rick Hendrick's team has built.

Roush ready to rebound in California

February 23, 2006

No one could have been as eager to leave Daytona as team owner Jack Roush. All of his drivers finished outside the top 10 in the season-opening Daytona 500, the first time that has happened in any race since July 2004. Mark Martin had a late pit problem, worked his way back through the field and wound up a team-high 12th. Matt Kenseth got into two altercations with defending series champion Tony Stewart that ended his shot at victory. He managed 15th despite the troubles.

Driver X produces bumper crop of prospects

February 23, 2006

The goal of Discovery Channel's "Roush Racing: Driver X" reality series was to find one driver and reward him or her with a full-time ride with Jack Roush's NASCAR team for 2006 and beyond. Nobody had a clue he series would wind up giving opportunities to six drivers - and not just with Roush. Erik Darnell was the TV show winner and had a successful debut last Friday night at Daytona International Speedway with a sixth-place finish in his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event.

Daytona run shows Mears is turning the corner

February 23, 2006

Casey Mears has defied the odds by lasting this long at Chip Ganassi Racing, where the car owner has an intolerance for mediocrity. Despite limited results, Mears was kept on for a fourth NASCAR season and opened it with the best run of his career - a second-place finish in the Daytona 500 last weekend. "I'm with a good team, we're fast, and I think a lot of things are going in the right direction," Mears said.
