Newman unrepentent about Daytona comments
February 25, 2006Six days has not changed Ryan Newman's mind. Last Sunday, after finishing third behind Jimmie Johnson and Casey Mears in the Daytona 500, Newman suggested that NASCAR should have done more to Johnson's team than simply ousting his crew chief after the team was caught cheating in qualifying. Crew chief Chad Knaus was later suspended for three additional races for making unapproved modifications to the rear window of Johnson's No. 48 Chevrolet.

With crew chief out, Johnson steps up to new role
February 25, 2006Jimmie Johnson knew it was time to take a more commanding role. With crew chief Chad Knaus removed by NASCAR, Johnson and the rest of the No. 48 Chevrolet team responded with a unified effort in winning the Daytona 500 last week. Lead engineer Darien Grubb moved across the pit box to fill in for Knaus on race day. Johnson drove a patient, nearly perfect race on the way to the 19th win of his Nextel Cup career.

'Intrepid' Busch takes first pole since 2004
February 25, 2006Kurt Busch won his first pole for his new team and his first in more than a year, taking the top spot Friday for the Auto Club 500 at California Speedway. His lap of 187.086 mph on the 2-mile oval was nearly a full mile an hour faster than runner-up Greg Biffle's 186.186 in qualifying for Sunday's race. "I'm happy that we got a pole," said Busch, who switched from Roush Racing and the No. 97 Ford to Penske Racing South and the No. 2 Dodge, replacing retired NASCAR star Rusty Wallace.
