Gulati elected USSF president
March 11, 2006Sunil Gulati was unanimously elected president of the United States Soccer Federation on Saturday and succeeds Bob Contiguglia, who is retiring after two four-year terms. Gulati, a member of Columbia University's economics department, said he intends within 100 days to outline initiatives in international relations, diversity and event hosting.

March 11, 2006Florent Malouda scored twice and four-time defending champion Lyon beat lowly Metz 4-0 Saturday to maintain a nine-point lead atop the French first division. Brazil midfielder Juninho assisted on every goal as Lyon followed on from its 4-0 midweek win over PSV Eindhoven in which it advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals. Lyon took the lead in the 13th minute when Malouda scored after running on to a pass from Juninho.

Tamudo gave Espanyol a 13th-minute lead from a low pass across goal by Luis Garcia. But defender Armando Sa was sent off in the 26th for a foul on Celta forward Daniel De Ridder.

League leader Bayern drew 0-0 with Wolfsburg, while second-place Bremen was beaten 3-0 by Hertha Berlin, which was previously winless in its last 13 matches.
U.S. team beats Denmark 5-0
March 11, 2006Heather O'Reilly scored twice and the U.S. women's team beat Denmark 5-0 in the Algarve Cup on Saturday. Captain Kristine Lilly, Abby Wambach and Natasha Kai also scored for the U.S. team, its largest margin of victory in the 13-year history of the tournament. Wambach opened the scoring in the 26th minute, and 4 minutes later O'Reilly scored after Carli Lloyd's shot hit the post. Lloyd started her first match for the U.S. team.
Rangers name Le Guen new manager
March 11, 2006Rangers named Frenchman Paul Le Guen as their new manager on Saturday, taking over next season for the departing Alex McLeish. The former Lyon coach, who left the French club after last season, was given a three-year contract. The ex-France and Paris St. Germain midfielder led Lyon to three successive league titles. "I am looking forward to the challenge at Rangers," Le Guen said.

March 11, 2006Rangers beat Kilmarnock 4-0 on Saturday to edge closer to Hearts and second place in the Scottish Premier League. Former Kilmarnock striker Kris Boyd's clinical finish gave Rangers the lead in the 13th minute. Kilmarnock then stymied Rangers before second-half goals by Julien Rodriguez, Dado Prso, and Peter Lovenkrands. Hearts was held 0-0 at Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Rangers is third on 52 points, six fewer than Hearts and a Champions League qualifying spot.
