Steaua Bucharest, Sevilla and Schalke advanced to the semifinals of the UEFA Cup with ties on Thursday and joined Middlesbrough, which beat Basel 4-1 to overcome a deficit from the first leg. Eduardo's goal in the 23rd minute gave visiting Basel a 3-0 lead in the two-game, total-goals series. Mark Viduka scored in the 33rd and 57th minutes, and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink got a goal in the 79th.
